Material for sawing
The wood intended for sawing should be barked or cleaned thoroughly, using high-pressure stream of water. The wood should be free of any dirt, sand or metal chips.

The material for sawing should be locked in a fixed position, preventing it from moving while being cut. The band guide pulleys should be aligned. The pulley diameter for saws 32-38 mm wide should be at least 450 mm; for saws 38-60 mm wide it should be c. 500 mm. Guide rolls should be matched to the saw width and pressed as close to the material sawn as possible. The saw strain should correspond to a given machine type DTR.

Hardness of wood

Hardness of wood depends on its density and increases with growth of a tree. It also depends, to a large degree, on a type of section, a wood being hardest at cross section. However, precise rating of hardness of wood is relatively difficult. In order to select the right saw it is helpful to divide wood into two following groups, with respect to its hardness:

soft raw wood: aspen, poplar, willow, fir, lime-tree, birch, alder, spruce, pine-tree, larch,

hard wood: elm, oak, ash-tree, beach-tree, hornbeam, ebony.
